Examiner Interview with Fred Singer on Climate Science

The Examiners interview with Fred Singer gives a summary of the present state of climate science. The interview ends with the following question and answer: You've devoted a lot of time and energy to this debate. Are you optimistic or pessimistic?

Singer: 

• I am really quite optimistic. I am sure that sound science must -- and will -- win out in the long run and convince not only scientists but also the public and politicians that climate change is almost all natural, and that a modest warming, should it occur, is good for humanity overall. 
• The revelations of “ClimateGate” will be very helpful here and show how a gang of determined climatologists was able to con almost everyone by cooking the data and stifling any scientific criticism from 'skeptics.'Of course, 'long run' may mean many more years -- during which the alarmists will try to impose policies that produce great economic hardships for no good reason. 
• I fear especially those who have learned to game the system and are using global warming scares to enrich themselves at our expense. I won't mention names but you know who they are: 
• Utopians who believe that global governance will lead to a better world; 
• Luddites who oppose technological advance and economic growth; 
• international bureaucrats and profiteers who want power and money. 
• If they ever gain the upper hand, the world may have a difficult time recovering.
• I hope I can be around when we can look back on past decades and say: "How could this climate insanity have fooled so many smart people?"
  

Singer cannot be expected to think highly of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

because of its unconditional support of IPCC and denial of Climategate. What does the Academy think of Singer?

The Academy should also get a bit nervous by contemplating the anticipated evaporation of  IPPC and its supports by TonyN and the analysis of Tony Hake in the Examiner:

• Other scientific organizations including the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Chemical Society (ACS) saw rifts grow in their membership. It became clear as the year progressed that the so-called scientific ‘consensus’ was anything but.

Artikel på Newsmill om IT-Matematik och Förslag till Björklund

Jag har öppnat en ny kanal, på Newsmill, med en artikel om behovet av IT-Matematik.

Skall bi intressant att se vad detta forum kan erbjuda. Varken DN eller SvD vill publicera något om behovet av, och möjligheten till, reform av matematikutbildningen i landet. Däremot gärna ännu en chock-rapport utan hopp. 

En huvuduppgift är att identifiera de personer som är ansvariga för den nuvarande matematikutbildningen, och därmed är ansvariga för den katastrofala situation som råder.

Detta kan visa sig vara svårt. Det kan vara så  att de som de facto är ansvariga förnekar sitt ansvar genom att skylla på andra och förneka all inblandning, eller helt enkelt genom att tiga bakom en stängd dörr. Frågan är då vilken form av tribunal som skall kunna avgöra den verkliga ansvarsfördelningen. Tanken är att detta är nödvändigt för att kunna öppna för en diskussion om reform, en diskussion som nu är lamslagen eller kortsluten.

Om vi följer principen att ansvar alltid till slut måste bäras av levande personer, så kan vi leta i första hand bland följande:

Vad anser dessa personer om sitt ansvar för matematikutbildningen i landet?  Vem tar på sig ett huvudansvar? Vem anser att ansvaret är någon annans?

Ett mycket vanligt sätt att krypa undan ansvar, är att hänvisa neråt i organisationen om man 

är uppåt toppen, och uppåt om man är längre ner. Den som är på toppen kan påstå sig inte vara informerad om detaljer, och den som är insatt i detaljer kan påstå sig bara lyda order uppifrån. Med denna teknik kan ansvar helt undvikas, för personer i ansvarsställning. Detta funkar förvånansvärt ofta, men är lätt att genomskåda, om man bara vill...

• Låt sedan dessa lärare överföra sin nya kunskap till resten av lärarkåren.
• Detta skulle ge en veritabel kick till både skola och samhälle, höja matematiklärarnas status och ge glada och kunniga elever.
• Vad är det som hindrar Dig Jan Björklund från att använda skattebetalarnas pengar på detta meningsfulla sätt, istället för att kasta dom i sjön? 
• Ditt beslut kan komma att avgöra valet 2010. Meningslös resursförstörelse är ingen valvinnare. Meningsfull reform kan vara en vinnare. Att satsa alla pengar på en halt häst är korkat och folkpartister har väl inte råd att vara så korkade, när 4% närmar sig?

Om Lars Berns Analys av COP15

Lars Bern gör följande analys av COP15:

• Mötet innebar det definitiva slutet för de nordatlantiska ländernas ledande ställning i världen. 
  
• Det är uppenbart att världens två nya supermakter Kina och Indien sett västs intensiva klimatoffensiv som ett försök att bromsa deras starka ekonomiska utveckling. 
• Västs ogenerade försök att behålla initiativet med hjälp av klimatpolitiken, genom att rigga någon sorts globalt styre runt FN har genomskådats. Varför skulle dessa stora länder acceptera att underordna sig ett genomkorrumperat FN som domineras av föredettingar från Andra Världskriget?
  
• För Hu Jintao blev COP15 en fullständig framgång, medan Obama och EU led motsvarande nederlag. 
  
• För EU och Sverige är utfallet av COP15 en katastrof. Sverige har på pseudovetenskapliga grunder lovat minska våra redan små koldioxidutsläpp i en utsträckning som kommer att bromsa vår ekonomiska utveckling och underminera vår konkurrenskraft, utan att få någon motprestation i utbyte vare sig av Kina, Indien eller USA. 
• Löftena bygger på den bräckliga föreställningen om vår rikedom. Flertalet västländer är hårt skuldsatta, har stora underskott i sina statsfinanser och är starkt beroende av importerad olja och gas. I framtiden kommer de därtill att få betala betydligt mer för den importerade energin i konkurrens med allt rikare kineser och indier. Den ekvationen kommer inte att gå ihop!
  
• Våra begränsade resurser bör läggas på fri forskning utan politisk programstyrning och på åtgärder för att möta eventuella effekter av verkliga klimatförändringar och andra allvarliga miljöproblem. 
  

Lars Bern ser samma dolda agenda bakom EUs klimatpolitik som jag själv anat: Begränsa användningen av fossil energi i utvecklingsländer, så att EU garanteras tillgång. Denna dolda agenda är nu avslöjad. Återstår att se hur EU och Sverige skall hantera denna nya situation...

Återstår att se hur KVA kommer att reagera. Kanske kommer KVA att börja följa vetenskapliga principer istället för politiska vindar...varvid IPCC torde upplösas...

När kommer KVA att titta på finsk TV som avslöjar Climategate bluffen?

Homo Computans of the Read-Write-Execute Society

The recent book Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew B. Crawford sings praise to the happy productive engaged craftsman and repair mechanic in direct contact with realities in his shop filled with useful tools and spare parts, as compared to the unhappy unproductive alienated bureaucrat imprisoned in his cubicle filled with useless documents. 

This is Homo faber  = Man the Smith or Man the Maker or the working man using tools.

Homo faber is the craftsman of a pre-industrial society using tools in an inventive fashion according to his own inspiration, as compared the worker at the assembly line of the industrial society repeating a prescribed set of simple routine tasks without inspiration. Homo faber would then connect to Homo ludens, the playing man, while the worker at the assembly line would associate with Homo tristis, the sad man.

If now Homo faber has largely disappeared as production has become mechanized, one may ask if Homo faber may reappear today as the computer wiz using the computer as a tool in an active inventive way, as compared to a Homo consumans passively consuming whatever is presented on the screen. The modern Homo faber could then be 

• Homo Computans =   the working man playing the computer.
  

Other possibilities are  Homo musicus  or Homo coquus = the cooking man.

Homo Computans would be representative of the interactive read-write-execute society now emerging  as the interactive web expands with blogs, youtube and facebook, as compared to the passive read-obey society of the 20th century with state-controled uni-directional radio and television channels. 

Gott Nytt År för Matematikutbildning

SvD vill inte ha min debattartikel Så Kan Mattekrisen Lösas och istället publicerades den i Ny Teknik. Själva temat, nämligen svensk matematikundervisning i fritt fall mot ständigt nya djup,

var det inget fel på: Dagen innan julafton publicerar SvD Brännpunkt ännu en larmrapport betitlad Regeringen slarvar bort mattereform av matematikerna Gerd Brandell, Ola Helenius och Olle Häggström, som kommer med följande analys och förslag:

• Svenska elevers dåliga mattekunskaper är alarmerande. Grundorsaken är att alla, oavsett program, läser samma kurser. Resultatet blir ett kursinnehåll bestående av dåliga kompromisser.
• Skolministern bör ge nya direktiv så att Skolverket kan uppdra åt sina experter att arbeta fram ett förslag med alternativa kurser för hela matematikämnet. Att en sådan modell kan skapas utan risk för inlåsningseffekter och utan extra kostnader har bland annat kommit fram under Skolverkets förberedande arbete med kursstrukturen.

Brandell, Helenius och Häggström är centralt placerade i svensk matematikutbildningspolitik, därav publiceringen i SvD, men har inget att komma med annat än tomma förhoppningar om att Skolverket nog skall klara biffen, den biff Skolverket så konsekvent har misslyckats med under lång tid. BHH tror uppenbarligen inte att undrens tid är förbi och frånkänner sig ansvar för sakernas tillstånd. Och inte ett ord om att Björklund föröder 525 miljoner i sin Matematiksatsning, pengar som skulle kunna ha lyft matematiken ur sitt svarta hål. Varför BHH så enkelt accepterar denna galenskap är svårt att förstå.

Vad som behövs är att universitetsmatematiker tar sitt ansvar. Jag väntar fortfarande på ett tecken att så är fallet. Tiden är mogen. Året är slut. Ett Nytt År väntar...

Matematiken är död. Leve Matematiken!

FN Tragik enligt Jan Eliasson

Förre utrikesministern och FN-ordföranden Jan Eliasson hotar  idag på DN Debatt med tragik om inte FN får uppfylla sin roll: 

• Djupt tragiskt om inte FN skulle kunna spela en central roll i klimatfrågan.
• Hur skall våra livs- och konsumtionsmönster förändras? Hur skall fattiga länder kompenseras? Alla dessa frågor ... inga svar.
• Det är angeläget att söka behålla FN-formatet för klimatförhandlingen. 
  
• FN riskerar annars att betraktas som irrelevant och helt ställas åt sidan. Det vore djupt ironiskt, ja tragiskt, om inte världsorganisationen spelade en central roll i en global ödesfråga.
• Om inte en sådan arbetsfördelning och mobilisering kring de konkreta problemen sker riskerar vi nya besvikelser och misslyckanden. 
  
• I dessa grumliga vatten frodas också farliga politiska krafter.
• Det är då viktigt att regeringscheferna behåller nära kontakt med förhandlingsförloppet och ger stöd till FN:s generalsekreterare att genomföra Köpenhamns mötets slutsatser och göra dem juridiskt bindande. 
• I många delar av världen – på Maldiverna, Grönland och, som jag själv sett, ökenutbredningens Afrika – drabbas människor i dag av klimatförändringen. 
• Det visade sig i Köpenhamn att någon trovärdig plan B inte fanns...det finns ingen planet B.

Jan Eliasson talar som om Climategate inte inträffat, som om 1995 - IPCC fortfarande bär planetens klimatvetenskap, som om COP15 kollapsen inte var verklig, som om planeten har värmts upp sedan 1995... Men så är det ju inte...

Nobel Prize Winners and Climategate?

The British star reporter Zeinab Badawi from BBC tries to get a reaction on Climategate from

this years Laurates assembled in the Royal Bernadotte Library at Stockholm Castle for a Swedish Television show on Dec 22.  

Surprisingly, nobody expresses any anger or criticism over the violation of scientific principles

in Climategate. The common conclusion seems rather to be, to the disappointment of Badawi and the Swedish people,  that this is the way science is, in particular at the frontiers of knowledge as in the case of climate science: Nothing to get excited about. Over time incorrect results will be corrected, by possibly new incorrect results and so on. That's how science is advanced. 

The same relaxed attitude is taken by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarding Nobel Prizes: The Academy has made a statement on climate change in support of IPCC denying Climategate. The Academy and its Laurates thus seem to take the common standpoint that Climatgate is a non-event. 

It seems that from a Nobel Prize viewpoint, Climategate is considered as most uncommon, so improbable that it cannot have happened, and at the same time most common just following the standard of normal science. 

But if so, science has lost its most valuable asset and has become just like any other kind of more or less dirty business or politics. Or maybe it has always been like that?

The Truth of Wikipedia and IPCC NonTruth

My own shocking disappointing experience with Wikipedia documented in Wikipedia Inquisition gets new actuality in the light of the recent posts on Watts Up With That on how Wikipedia controls the truth of climate science.

In the Wikipedia article on Global Warming the truth of IPCC is presented and skepticism

to climate alarmism gets three lines at the end. Climategate is not mentioned. 

The science of Wikipedia is controled by anonymous editors or wikipedians who control scientific truth to their taste. This violates the most fundamental principles of science of openness with the truth being defined by named living scientists held responsible for their scientific findings and claims.

The fact that scientific truth today is defined by the authority of closed societies of non-scientists, takes us back the Inquisition before the Enlightenment with religion defining the laws of physics of the World.

In this situation is absolutely essential that scientific institutions like the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences adheres to principles of science instead of principles of non-science of Wikipedia and IPCC revealed  in Climategate and defended by Al Gore.

Assessments of Copenhagen gives a sum-up of the accomplishments of Obama and Brown.

Wall Street Journal reports that the carbon permits market slided into  €12.41 ($17.73) per metric ton Monday, while:

• Investors in low-carbon or no-carbon energy technology, such as solar panels, wind turbines and nuclear power, say the prices for carbon permits must be much higher than current levels -- in some cases, as much as €60 a ton -- to make their systems cost-competitive with coal, oil or natural gas.
  

It does not look too good...It Is Time for Plan B...

Goodbye Swedish Engineering

Today we get the expected message that GM will shut down Saab. We recall our previous analysis: The fundamental reason is that Swedish engineering education is old-fashioned and ineffective. 

Now we hear clever people saying: OK, no problem, we can always produce something else than cars, since we have such a good engineering tradition in Sweden . Yes, we have traditional engineers, but not the modern engineering competence required today, because the education is old-fashioned. Not even Leif Johansson, chairman of Volvo AB and Teknikdelegationen, understands:

• I am not to complain about the standard of Swedish engineering education. 
  

This is the basic problem: LJ is himself a product of a traditional engineering education, and is incapable of understanding what is today required to be competitive. If people in charge of Swedish industry cannot understand that Swedish engineering education cannot rest in tradition, but has to be modernized, then the consequence is that Swedish industry will be shut down. It is not even clear that we can shift to producing wheelbarrows if cars don't work out. Too bad, but who cares?

The next to go is Volvo Car, sold to Ford 10 years ago by Leif Johansson. Too bad, but...

The basic reason Swedish car industry is now being dismantled, is that it was sold out 10 years because Swedish industrial competence was no longer sufficient. Why? Old-fashioned education?

Sciencegate of Magical Thinking in Copenhagen

The World leaders assembled in Copenhagen could not agree on anything but begging the Earth to not warm up more than 2 degrees Celcius, without telling how this might be enforced upon the Earth. This reflects a somewhat alarming magical thinking of our leaders, far from any scientific enlightenment and rationality.

The World leaders thus passed a potentially dangerous tipping point with the push coming from the collapse of UN climate science in Climategate. In order to restore sound rational scientific thinking, which most people would ask for, it is necessary to restore the credibility of science and scientists. 

To this end it is necessary that scientific academies withdraw their unconditional support of the UN climate panel IPCC. Without such support IPCC will fall together with UN climate science and politics.

In particular, The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will have to revise its statement on climate change in support of IPCC. This statement is signed by 3 climate science experts in the Academy, but there is also a contradictory statement signed by 3 other climate science experts in the Academy. The score is thus even, and the withdrawal can come any time...stay tuned...

Science and scientific controversy is like a boxing match, where there can be only one winner

and compromise is not allowed. Either the Earth is flat or round, but not something in between. 

Obama came all the way from the US to give the World the following encouraging message:

• You would not be here unless you – like me – were convinced that this danger is real. This is not fiction, this is science. Unchecked, climate change will pose unacceptable risks to our security, our economies, and our planet. That much we know.
• Now, I believe that it's time for the nations and people of the world to come together behind a common purpose. We must choose action over inaction; the future over the past – with courage and faith, let us meet our responsibility to our people, and to the future of our planet. 
• Thank you.

The logic is clear: Since people are there in Copenhagen, the danger is real. But this is again magical illogical thinking. The people understand this very well, and the leaders of World also of course, even if they do not admit it...the real agenda is different...
