Obama: Global Climate Accord with Immediate Operational Effect

The Australian reports that Barack Obama and Hu Jintao push for climate deal with immediate effect as announced in a press conference. Obama explained the meaning of "immediate effect":
  • we are creating a joint clean energy center
  • we agreed to work to a successful outcome in Copenhagen
  • this kind of comprehensive agreement would be an important step forward in the effort to rally the World around  a solution to our climate challenge
  • we agreed that each of us would take signifiant mitigation actions and stand behind these commitments.
Altogether words without much content. Obama also informed Jintao that
  • all men and women possess certain fundamental human rights
  • these are universal rights which should be available to all peoples and to all ethnic a religious minorities.
The stone-face of Jintao did not change, but he swallowed once and blinked.

Der Spiegel is upset: Obama Lied to the Europeans:
  • Barack Obama cast himself as a "citizen of the world" when he delivered his well-received campaign speech in Berlin in the summer of 2008. But the US president has now betrayed this claim. In his Berlin speech, he was dishonest with Europe.

Maybe something in Obama is starting to become skeptic, by reading the Wall Street Journal article Revenge of the Climate Laymen.

Or maybe something in Obama is shaking when reading that almost two-thirds of weathercaster in the US disagree that “global climate models are reliable in their projections for a warming of the planet”.

Before meeting Jintao Obama bowed to the Emperor of Japan, which has caused head-lines in the US accusing Obama of showing weakness. Is the feeling of the soul coupled to the posture of the body? Is Obama bowing to science?

The Importance of Open Scientific Debate, at Any Cost

Science and democratic society are based on the principle of free speech and open debate as
the means to reach agreement on essential issues. However, the leader of the climate alarmism Al Gore refuses to debate with alarmism skeptics and thus does not follow the basic rules of science and democratic politics. To come to grips with this obstruction the Competitive Enterprise Institute has launched the campaign
Join the campaign to support open scientific debate, the principle of science!

An explanation why Al Gore refuses debate is given in these clips.

Big Bang of Unscrambled Eggs

Caltech theoretical physicist Sean Carroll explains to us in Why does the Universe look the way it does? that
  • The reason we find a direction in time here in this room or in the kitchen when you scramble an egg or mix milk into coffee is not because we live in the physical vicinity of some important object, but because we live in the aftermath of some influential event, and that event is the Big Bang. The Big Bang set all of the clocks in the world. When we go down to how we evolve, why we are born and then die, and never in the opposite order, why we remember what happened yesterday and we don’t remember what is going to happen tomorrow, all of these manifestations of the difference between the past and the future are all coming from the same source. That source is the low entropy of the Big Bang…
If you think this sounds like understandable meaningful science, you are probably a theoretical physicist participating in the Quantum to Cosmos Festival featuring Carroll speaking on The Origin of the Universe and the Arrow of Time.

If you don't think this makes any sense at all, I can join you and offer an alternative to Big Bang as the origin of the difficulty of unscrambling eggs: finite precision computation.

SvD and Scientific Skepticism to Climate Alarmism

articles:
So far an overweight of 5.5 for political alarmism to 2 for scientific skepticism and 1 for the poor.  A different perspective is reported by The Times but such perspectives do not reach SvD. In particular SvD is not open to the IPCC-critical perspective of Lars Bern. Why? At any rate SvD shows that there is no consensus, which should be reported to Reinfeldt and Carlgren.

Since the question of climate change is scientific, answers can only be sought in open debate between scientists, in particular an open debate where alarmists are directly confronted with the arguments of alarmism skeptics, and vice versa. SvD could invite to such a debate, when the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has already declared one-sided alarmism.

Why not invite Vaclav Klaus speaking about e.g. politicians promises? Some of us may recall that after the referendum in 1980 Swedish politicians promised to close down Swedish nuclear power by 2010. Today 10 reactors are still running, the older waiting to get replaced by new fresh more powerful ones...Maybe Klaus has a point...

But Klaus have many to argue with: The scientific academies of the G8+5 countries including US, China and India have made a statement:
  • The IPCC 2007 Fourth Assessment of climate change  science concluded that large reductions in the  emissions of greenhouse gases, principally CO2, are needed soon to slow the increase of atmospheric  concentrations, and avoid reaching unacceptable levels.
  • The need for urgent action to address climate change is now indisputable.
  • For example, limiting global  warming to 2°C would require a very rapid worldwide  implementation of all currently available low carbon  technologies. The G8+5 should lead the transition to  an energy efficient and low carbon world economy,  and foster innovation and research and development  for both mitigation and adaptation technologies.
  • Capitalizing on new technologies will require a major scientific effort and policy initiatives to accelerate  adoption of new technologies. The need to find  solutions to climate change presents a huge but as yet unrealized opportunity for the creation of new jobs  and for the stimulation of new and emerging markets.  The role of innovation in delivering energy efficiency  and a low carbon world should become a major part of the efforts to rebuild the global economy.
How is it possible that the leading scienitfic academies without scientific questioning simply accepts the alarmism of IPCC as "undisputable"? Is the prospect of massive funding of "major scientific effort" and "to rebuild the global economy" so irresistable, that there is no place for
scientific inquiry?

No wonder that The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has jumped the bandwagon, maybe encouraged by the fact that the American Physical Society (APS) has "overwhelmingly rejected" a proposal from a group of 160 physicists to alter its official position on climate change, on the recommendations of a six-person committee which spent the last four months carrying out what the APS calls "a serious review of existing compilations of scientific research".  Is this what is meant by scientific consensus? 6 speaking for 160?

It is natural to ask if the review covers the 450 Peer-Reviewed Papers Supporting Skepticism on AGW listed by Popular Technology?

New York Times reports from the APEC meeting in Singapore that also political consensus is lacking:
  • President Obama and other world leaders have decided to put off the difficult task of reaching a climate change agreement at a global climate conference scheduled for next month, agreeing instead to make it the mission of the Copenhagen conference to reach a less specific “politically binding” agreement that would punt the most difficult issues into the future.
Of course, political consensus follows scientific consensus: For example, there is scientific consensus on an inescapable gravitational accelleration  of 9.81 m/s2 pulling all of us towards the center of the Earth, and there is accordingly political consensus to not seek a global agreement to limit gravitation to the Mars value of 3.7 m/s2, even if that would be desirable as a preparation to colonise Mars.

Climate alarmism is effective only so far it leads to concrete actions to avoid the disaster which would follow if no actions were taken. To scream that the wolf is coming while doing nothing is not convincing, in particular not in politics. To avoid the contradiction between alarm and no-action, either the alarm has to be increased to such a level that no-action becomes impossible, or the alarm has to be decreased to such a level that no-action is possible. The dilemma of the politics of the Copenhagen meeting is to choose between increasing or decreasing the alarm. It will be interesting to see which option will be chosen...or if Obama will be able  come up with a compromise with at the same time both increased and decreased alarm...with at the same time action and no-action...

The Telegraph reports on Nov 15 that the UK Met Office warns that The World has only ten years to control global warming and also that Copenhagen climate change agreement is impossible. The contradiction is unbearable...

Meanwhile little childern get scared by ACTONCO2 "Bedtime Stories" about the coming horrors of CO2, with the child's question: Is there a happy ending? answered  by the cryptic: It is up to us how the story ends, see what you can do. Is this not abuse of children? Is it allowed in our enlightened society? Our Minister of Environment Andreas Carlgren supports the bedtime story with:
  • The climate and people of the Earth cannot wait for actions to save the climate, and the people...it is up to us how the story ends, see what you can do...
But there are other bedtime stories more suitable for children, like the one by Nils Mörner, the World expert on sea level, comforting the children of the Maldives that they will not be flooded
because of the evils of CO2 polluters.

Denver Post reports that Obama retreats on climate change and Prof C-G Ribbing at the Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University writes in SvD that AGW is exaggerated.  And Lord Monckton's alarmism skeptic video clip has received over 3.5 million views. Maybe little children can go to sleep without too much fear...after all...

SvD reports Nov 18 that the bill for climate alarmism may be up $800 billion per year of which so far only $10 billion is secured. Nobody is willing to pay, except EU led by Sweden a little, and the question is then if alarmism can survive. According to the above analysis, it cannot...to scream that we all have to pay because the wolf is coming and refusing to pay is contradictory. To understand that the wolf is not coming and instead pay to make the World better is not contradictory, and could be adopted as an honorable cause for the leaders of the World and all of us...Maybe SvD could help Reinfeldt and Carlgren to get on this road?

The Toronto Star and other media reports that in California a standard TV will not be allowed to consume more than 183 Watts, about the double of what a human being at rest consumes, or burns into heat. If the energy consumption of a standard human being in standby could be reduced to say 50 Watts by 2012, a lot would be saved...

How Climate Alarmism Got Started: The Lorenz Equations

Climate change alarmism was initiated at the 1965 conference Causes of Climate Change in Boulder, when the mathematician and meteorologist Edward Lorenz presented a simple mathematical model with solutions being very sensitive to perturbations in e.g. initial values. The assembled scientists where shocked because Lorenz mathematical model, later referred to as the Lorenz equations, could be viewed as a simplified version of the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid dynamics and thus as a simple climate model.

The shock came from the argument that since solutions of the Lorenz equation are so sensitive to perturbation, a flap of a butterfly in the Amazonas could very well set off a tornado in Texas. Truely shocking mathematics! As summarized after the conference by Roger Revelle, advisor of the young Harward student Al Gore. Climate alarmism was under way, although Revelle became a skeptic before passing away.

But let's take a step back from shock and see more precisely what the Lorenz equations as a simple climate model tell us. I have already done that in Chapter 13 my book with Johan Hoffman Computational Turbulent Incompressible Flow, where in the context of turbulent flow we exhibit the Lorenz equations as an example of a mathematical model with solutions being
  • pointwise predictable over short-time
  • pointwise unpredictable over long-time
  • mean-value predictable over long-time
which also are characteristics of climate systems. This means that it is possible to predict the daily weather a couple of days ahead but not a year ahead, because the system is short-time exponentially unstable with positive feedback. However it is possible to predict the  monthly mean-value a year ahead, like tourist guide books do, because of cancellation with positive feedback compensated by negative feedback.

For the Lorenz equations the butterfly pattern is stable and predictable, and as shown in the book the ratio of the number of trajectory revolutions in the two "wings" tends to 1.

In other words, it is impossible to say if it will rain 30 days ahead, but it is possible to predict the monthly mean precipitation one year ahead, simply because after rain comes sunshine.
Not because the weather is random, but because the dynamics of the system is such that if
goes up for a while it has to go down.

The waving flag is an example of such a system: after waving to one side the flag will wave to the other side: the mean direction over long-time can be predicted to be the wind direction, but to predict on what side the flag will be is possible only a very short time ahead.

We conclude that the Lorenz system is not a sign of alarm. If anything, it can be taken as support of beliefs that mean-values will never change over long time, e.g. that the global mean temperature will never change. But doing so would not be correct from a scientific point of view, because systems like the Lorenz equations, or the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow, do not model non-linear effects which could cause a drift of mean-values over long time. We know that in the real climate the mean global temperature has changed and will continue to change, and climate models must capture this effect to be meaningful.

long-time mean-value accurate, and hence probably are meaningless. Compare Short-time vs Long-time Accuray 1 and 2.

Climate alarmism was thus born out of a misunderstanding of mathematics, as perfected by Einstein.

This is not good news for Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd who launched a spirited attack on climate skeptics on Friday, saying a vocal minority is powerful enough to threaten a global deal at next month's Copenhagen climate summit:
  • Climate skeptics, deniers and opponents of climate action are active in every country, have limited the ambition of national climate change commitments and slowed progress of carbon trade laws in the United States and Australia. They are a minority. They are powerful, and invariably they are driven by vested interests.
  • They are powerful enough to threaten a deal on global climate change both in Copenhagen and beyond.
Ban-Ki Moon joins with The Greatest Challenge og Our Time opening a new debate in SVD: Climate from different angles. Almost all 50 comments so far are negative to climate alarmism reflecting an increasing global apathy...  It will be interesting to see if SVD will invite skeptics with different angles...

Any reactions?

Royal Swedish Academy of Scientific Consensus

I have received answers to my questions to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences KVA concerning the statement of the Academy The Scientific Basis for Climate Change.

However the answers are unclear and I renewed my questions to KVA on Nov 2:

1. Is there scientific consensus on AGW, according to KVA?

2. Has KVA undertaken an independent investigation including measurements and modeling of AGW, or is the Academy relying on IPCC?

The question on scientific consensus is intriguing: If according to KVA there is consensus, then it appears to be pointless for KVA to make a statement. For example, it would be surprising to see KVA making a statement that the Earth is not flat. So, when KVA now makes a statement on climate change, it means that KVA chooses standpoint in an ongoing scientific controversy and  non-consensus on AGW, where IPCC is one part. But in order for the statement to make sense as a statement by a scientific academy, KVA must form an opinion independentof IPCC.
My question is if KVA has done that.

KVAs secretary Gunnar Öquist claims that KVA is not a governmental institution or "statlig myndighet", but KVA is listed as such. This means that KVA by Swedish law is obliged to answer questions.

No answers as of Nov 9. But the questions remain.

Meanwhile the US has given up hopes on Global Change Treaty in Copenhagen, once billed by the UN as a last chance to avoid catastrophic global warming:
  • We don't have time to put the language together and flesh out every crossed t and dotted i of a treaty,
said John Kerry, who chairs the Senate foreign relations committee.

Science as Religion

  • An executive has won the right to sue his employer on the basis that he was unfairly dismissed for his green views after a judge ruled that environmentalism had the same weight in law as religious and philosophical beliefs.
  • In a landmark ruling, Mr Justice Michael Burton said that "a belief in man-made climate change ... is capable, if genuinely held, of being a philosophical belief for the purpose of the 2003 Religion and Belief Regulations".
  • The executive, Mr Nicholson, hailed the Employment Appeals Tribunal ruling as "a victory for common sense" but stressed climate change was "not a new religion" and said:
  • "I believe man-made climate change is the most important issue of our time and nothing should stand in the way of diverting this catastrophe.
Mr Nicholson does not believe that climate change is a religion, even if the judge does so. Can that be taken as a new reason for dismissal? Or is  to believe that something is science and not religion, also a form of religion?

What is in fact the difference between science and religion? If  God is Mathematician, which many scientists and mathematicians believe, does it mean that mathematical sciences are religion? Compare Taking Science on Faith.

Can insisting that curved space-time of eleven dimensions is the most important issue of our time, be a reason for dismissal?

Feed-Back on Climate Sensitivity by Lindzen and Spencer

Spencer comments on the recent article by Lindzen and Choi about climate feed-backs computed from ERBE data. Let me add some comments: A simple mathematical climate model takes the form

dT/dt = Q + A T - B T,

where T is temperature, e.g. global ocean surface temperature, t is time, Q is radiative heat forcing, A T is feed-back heat forcing from e.g. water vapour and clouds and B T is feed-back into outgoing LW radiation, with B a positive constant and A positive for positive feed-back.

ERBE data gives information on time-variations of T and outgoing radiation B T, indicating that B is in the range 4-6 W/m2K. The time-variation of Q + A T thus is given by measured data, which may allow determination the coefficient A under some assumption on Q as an unknown source. This would allow computation of climate sensitivity

S = Q/C with C = B - A

with Q = 3.7 W/m2K the known radiative forcing from doubling of CO2.

Lindzen claims to obtain from measurement that S is less than 1 degree Celcius, while IPCC from climate models gets S in the range 2 - 5 degrees Celcius, which is the scientific climate debate in a nutshell. I don't see how to retrace Lindzen's estimate of S in the data, which is also the concern of Spencer.

It seems that Lindzen from outgoing radiation computes A to be negative thus indicating negative feedback. But outgoing radiation is modeled by B T and not A T and in principle B - A can be small corresponding to large climate sensitivity, even if B = 4 - 6 as measured. It seems that true climate sensitivity is still to be determined, although Lindzen in his lecture Deconstructing Global Warming makes the rather bold statement: the very issue of global warming is wrong, since climate sensitivity is about 0.5 degrees Celcius upon doubling of CO2. I have written to Lindzen to get some clarification and am expecting some feed-back.

Nevertheless, Lindzen observed that current climate models driven by surface temperature predict much less outgoing LW radiation than measured by ERBE, which is an indication that current climate models overestimate S, by underestimating C.

More precisly, it seems that Lindzen claims that current climate models predict that less radiation escapes to space as the surface temperature rises. In the model this would seem to mean that B, or B - A is negative, which Lindzen interpretes as cloud cover thickening with increasing temperature and compares with measurements indicating instead a thinning cloud cover. Lindzen calls this thermostatic behavior the Iris-effect. But can it really be true that current climate models are so completely off track that they indicate less outgoing radiation under surface temperature increase, which seems exponentially unstable?

As a more domestic interpretation of the above model we may think of heating a room with a window with a curtain through a heat source Q, where B T represents the heat going out through the window and A T represents shielding from the curtain, with B the heat transfer coefficient of the window and A a shielding coefficient of the curtain. With positive feed-back A is positive, which means that increasing temperature comes with increasing curtain cover, obviously a case of concern. Measurements are made of T and B T under an unknown heat source Q, and what is sought is the temperature rise T under a given heat source Q, which directly relates to the shielding coefficient A through T = Q/C with C = B - A. The response of the system to changes in T is thus measured, under an unknown heat source, and what is sought is the response of the system under a known heat source. Depending on the data the requested feedback coefficient A can be more or less well determined. The time-dynamics is determined by the exponential damping factor exp(- C t) and slow damping indicates small C and thus large positive feedback, while quick damping indicates small feedback.

The above equation is a very simple climate model, and Lindzen uses an even simpler model in his estimation of climate sensitivity. It cannot be reasonable to let the fate of humanity depend on such simple models. It must be possible to do better...I thus agree with the statements of Spencer:

  • In any event, I don’t think the question of exactly what feedbacks are exhibited by the ERBE satellite is anywhere close to being settled.
  • I predict that Lindzen and Choi will eventually be challenged by other researchers who will do their own analysis of the ERBE data ... and then publish conclusions that are quite divergent from the authors’ conclusions.
