Is Quantum Computing Fiction?

In Chalmers Magasin for Alumni I read about research by Per Delsing and Göran Wendin on quantum computing using qu-bits, supposedly represented by superposed quantum states allowing computations, which are not possible on the computer we know using standard bits restricted to the two values 0 and 1.

Delsing and Wendin report that superposed states of 2-3 qu-bits have been realized but that 10 qu-bits represents a real challenge, not to speak of the thousands or millions needed for real quantum computing. Listen to Quantum Computing: Origins and Directions.

The basic question concerns superposition of quantum states, which is the question if the basic equation of quantum mechanics, Schrödinger's equation, is a linear equation.

I present reflections about this question in my knols on quantum mechanics, leading to the conclusion that Schrödinger's equation for a many-electron system is not linear, indicating that quantum computing is pure fiction. But maybe I am wrong. Would be interesting with some response from experts on quantum mechanics.

Reply 1 from + Letter 2 to Björklund

Svar från Utbildningsdepartementet på brev till Jan Björklund Juni 7:

Juni 12

Claes Johnson

Pirate Party of Science

The success of the Pirate Party in the recent Swedish EU-elections, in particular among young voters, gives a boost to the idea that in a free society, information must be freely available to all citizens, just as air and the right to express an opinion are free.

In our new information society, information can be freely available to everybody, because the cost is small. File-sharing costs nothing.

But we are far from this free society of free citizens with free access to information, and the most flagrant violation is represented by scientific publishing: Scientific journals run by big commercial publishing companies such a Springer, own the copyrights of scientific articles and charge readers including the authors of the articles.

The traditional role of a publishing company was to print and distribute information on paper, for which a charge could be motivated. Today scientific journals appear on-line at zero cost and a charge can no longer be motivated, since the scientists writing the articles typically are financed by public money; results of public investments should remain public.

In a free society, free citizens must have free access to research results, without paying Springer. A Pirate Party of Science should be formed.

Did Math Cause the Financial Crisis?

Did mathematicians cause the financial crisis by constructing financial instruments which nobody could understand? Maybe: See
But admitting to not understand cuts the branch your are sitting on, if you present yourself as expert on financial analysis.  It is not an excuse of the President of the US to not understand the mathematics of going to war, for example. As responsible you have to understand, or at least you must try to understand. If you cannot understand, then you should change responsibilities.

When a financial bubble is forming, everybody wants to jump on the train, and this seems to be an unavoidable feature of capitalism, see Instability of Capitalism.

What can be learned is that understanding the possibilities and in particular the limitations of mathematical modeling, is very important in economics, engineering and all the other application areas of mathematics. If decision-makers view Mathematics as Magics, then completely wrong decisions can be made.

The moral is that a modern mathematics education can help to keep our society from collapse. But the present mathematics education does not fill this need well, because it was formed in the pre-computer era of the scientific revolution of the 18th century. Reform is needed! Now! See my blog of June 3 Change of Paradigm in Science and Engineering.

Letter 1 to School Minister Jan Björklund

  • Recitera valfria matematiska teorem under 10 minuter.

  • Recitera valfria nationalromantiska dikter under 10 minuter.

Swedish Politics of Science and Education

The Swedish  Ministry of Education and Research has decided to allocate
Together this corresponds to roughly 30% of the yearly total research budget of the Ministry of Education and is roughly equal to the extra 500 million € allocated to Swedish research over a four year period to save it from free fall.

ESS is a particle accelerator smashing neutrons into organic and non-organic material to find out "where atoms are and what atoms do". This seems like exploding a nuclear bomb over a city in order to find out where people are and what people do.

Is ESS wisely spent money? Not according to the Royal Academy of Sciences questioning the value of the science of ESS and anticipating that ESS will drain research financing, in particular in little Sweden. ESS is claimed to be a politically but not scientifically motivated project.

Is the money to a dysfunctional education of math teacher wisely spent money? Not according to a recent Ph D thesis by Sverker Lundin presenting a critical analysis of Swedish school mathematics in constant crisis.

Instead of spending big money to little effect, small money spent on introducing computational mathematics in the educational system could have a large effect both in atomistic materials research and in school mathematics as evidenced in my knols on mathematics education in the computer age and my previous blog.

Swedish National Holiday for Mathematics Reform?

Today is the National Day of Sweden. Is it also a day to celebrate Swedish Science and Swedish Engineering Education? Maybe not.

I see an engineering education in a spiral of decline towards trivialization, because both content and form has remained basically the same over the period of 50 years I have experienced, while the landscape of science and industry has been revolutionized by the computer.

Engineering education is based on mathematics, and the quality of basic math courses sets the quality of the eduction as a whole. Mathematics combined with the computer offers the scientist and engineer a new powerful tool for simulation.

Presenting this tool in basic math courses gives both students and teachers new spirit to tackle the challenges of global competition and can turn the spiral upwards. This is the goal of the Body&Soul program with further motivation developed in the knols about Mathematics/Science Education.

It is not impossible that we can have reason to celebrate Swedish National Holiday of Mathematics Reform in 2010.

Simulation Technology at KTH: Yes or No?

A proposal for a Bachelors program in Simulation Technology ST based on Body&Soul is now on the table of the President of the Royal Institute of Technology KTH in Stockholm for decision on June 17.

The combat lines are clear: The School of Computer Science and Communication CSC, the Dean of the Faculty and the Vicedean of Education support  the program,  while the the School of Science and Mathematics SCI is seeking to stop the program at any price.

ST offers a true synthesis of mathematics, computation and application and reflects the change of paradigm in science and engineering driven by computational simulation with new questions and answers.

SCI seeks to stop ST because it threatens to make traditional education in mathematics and mechanics obsolete with old answers to old no longer relevant questions. This attitude can be understood as a reptile brain reaction, but it prevents education at KTH and thereby Swedish research and industry from taking a leading role, which would be possible with reform.

If KTH decides to open the ST program, against the will of SCI, traditional mathematics/science education will become increasingly difficult to maintain. The consequencies can be far-reaching. Latin is no longer taught by Departments of Latin...

If KTH decides to stop ST, against the will of CSC and deans, the malfunctioning of the traditional education will deepen without hope of resurrection.

So the President has tough decision to take, but there is really only one possibility:
  • Yes! Reform and Change of Paradigm!
  • For Sweden, with the Times! Motto of King Carl XVI Gustaf.

The Airbus Catastrophy: A Design Error?

The number of pageviews of my articles on Knol have now passed 60.000 with about 3.000 per week. The overview My Book of Knols was chosen as a Best Knol of the Month of May.

It is interesting to speculate about the future of Knol and communication of knowledge in general. So far, scientists have not used Knol to spread their knowledge to the people.

Maybe they are happy to talk to themselves and publish technical articles in technical journals inaccessible to the general public, but in the new media climate of today this may not be the best strategy.

But medical specialists use Knol to give information about their speciality.

The knol Why It Is Possible to Fly reveals the true fluid dynamics of the gliding flight of airplanes and birds based on advanced computation, which is not the non-physical incorrect dynamics presented in text books. The knol has 4000 pageviews but no comment from any scientist in support of the text book fluid mechanics of flight.

Even if the flight of an airplane, like the flight of a bumble-bee, apparently is a theoretical mystery to scientists, design engineers and pilots, many thousands of passengers enter airplanes every day in true conviction that they will be able not only to take off but also safely land at their destination.

Of course, these days the thoughts go to the passengers of the Air France Airbus which disappeared over the Atlantic, maybe because of effects of heavy turbulence not properly accounted for in the design.

In Mathematical Theory of Flight we show that computational simulation of an airplane under critical dynamic conditions such as take-off, landing and heavy turbulence is possible, which is considered impossible in state-of-the-art.
