Language and mathematics are commonly viewed to be the core subjects of school education following all students during 10-12 years of training. It is obvious that good language skills are helpful in coping with life and job, but most people use so little mathematics that 10 years of study seems out of proportion. How can it be that so much time and effort is spent to so little effect?
In his Ph D thesis Sverker Lundin uses tools of sociology and psychoanalysis in a critical analysis of the nature and role of school mathematics and now continues the discussion on a blog. As of now the language is Swedish but let's hope that an English version will soon be available. The analysis and discussion is very important, very intriguing and even mind-boggling!
