Skolan i IT-Samhället

Datorn i Skolmatematiken

IT-Matematik: Perspektiv

  • We've got a real problem with math education today.
  • I believe that computers correctly used is the silver bullet that can make math education work.
  • Computer-based math: Critical reform.
  • The country that does it first will leap-frog others.
  • This is not an incremental sort of change.
  • I want to see a completely renewed changed math curriculum built form the ground up based on computers...
  • I am not even sure we should brand the subject as math.
  • What I am sure is that it is the main-stream subject of the future.

  • We've got a real problem with math education today.
  • I believe that computers correctly used is the silver bullet that can make math education work.
  • Computer-based math: Critical reform.
  • The country that does it first will leap-frog others.

The Enigma of the Aerofoil 3

                                                         Sir Leonard Bairstow (1880-1963)

The Enigma of the Aerofoil by David Bloor describes the dispute in England after the 1st World War between Leonard Bairstow representing Cambridge mathematics and Hermann Glauert influenced by German aerodynamics engineering led by Ludwig Prandtl, concerning the fundamental problem of aerodynamics of flight with the following highlite:
  • The International Air Congress for the year 1923 was held in London. It provided a further occasion for assessing the advances that had been made in aeronautics during the war years and for addressing unresolved problems. It was a highly visible platform on which the supporters and opponents of the circulatory theory could express their opinions and, in some cases, air their grievances.
  • In the morning session of Wednesday, June 27, there were three speakers: Leonard Bairstow, Hermann Glauert, and Archibald Low. The first to speak was Bairstow, whose talk was titled “The Fundamentals of Fluid Motion in Relation to Aeronautics.”
  • Bairstow was explicit: his aim was nothing less than the mathematical deduction of all the main facts about a wing from Stokes’ equations and the known boundary conditions.
  • The work of Stanton and Pannell had shown that eddying motion did not compromise the no-slip condition and had established kinematic viscosity as the only important variable. “These experiments appear to me,” said Bairstow, “to remove all doubt as to the correctness of the equations of motion of a viscous fluid as propounded by Stokes and the essential boundary conditions which give a definite solution to the differential equations.
  • The range of these equations covers all those problems in which viscosity and compressibility are taken into account, and from them should follow all the consequences which we know as lift, drag etc. by mathematical argument and without recourse to experiment. Such a theory is fundamental”.
  • The boundary conditions were empirical matters, but thereafter everything should follow deductively: lift, drag, changes in center of pressure, the onset of turbulent flow and stalling characteristics, along with a host of other results.
In short, Bairstow stated that theoretical aerodynamics could be reduced to solving the Navier-Stokes equations for slightly viscous flow using mathematics. Bairstow thus reduced aerodynamics to mathematics, in the same way as celestial mechanics was by Newton reduced to solving the equations of motion for a set of n bodies subject to gravitational attraction, referred to as the n-body problem.

Newton showed that the equations of motion could be solved analytically for a sun with one planet (n=2) and by followers using perturbation techniques for a planetary system like ours (n=10), which made Newton immensely famous.

But Bairstow (and nobody else at his time) could solve the Navier-Stokes equations in any case of interest of aerodynamics,  which made his grand plan useless. Bairstow thus had nothing to match Glauert's The Elements of the Aerofoil and Air Screw Theory published in 1926 based on circulation theory for inviscid flow with a fix-up in the form of the Kutta condition at the trailing edge, which gave some results and set the text book standard into our time.

Today it is possible to solve the Navier-Stokes equations using computers and Bairstow's grand plan can finally be realized.  This shifts the weight back to fundamentals without fix-up boosted by computation, and circulation theory with fix-up has no longer any role to play, as explained in detail on The Secret of Flight.

Letter to AIAA Journal Chief Editor into Waste Basket

The following letter was sent to AIAA Journal Chief Editor Peretz P. Friedman on Sept 17.
The letter was thrown into the waste basket by AIAA without answer.

Concerning New Theory of Flight submitted to AIAA Journal

In March 2012 we submitted the article New Theory of Flight to AIAA
Journal. The article presents a new mathematical description of the
generation of lift and drag from the flow of air around a wing, which is
fundamentally different from the current textbook theory based on the work
by Kutta-Zhukovsky-Prandtl. Our new theory is based on a mathematical
analysis of computed solutions of the 3d Navier-Stokes equations with lift
and drag within experimental error tolerance for all angles of attack
including stall and beyond.

The assigned AIAA Journal editor Gregory Blaisdell acknowledges that our
article "is unusual in that it challenges our existing understanding of
aerodynamics". However, the challenge is not really evaluated by the
reviewers and the editor, who instead respond by a lengthy defense of
exactly the existing theory we question using exactly the same arguments
we question, without actually considering our arguments and evidence.

One of the reviewers states: "The authors provide no documented scientific
evidence to discredit the current state of the art”, but acknowledges
that: “At most, perhaps they present a numerical model of the governing
equations which avoids the need to discretize the boundary layer“.

Our objective is not to "discredit" classical theory. But we do present a
new theory made possible through the recent developments in computational
modeling of turbulent flow based on the Navier-Stokes equations, which
allows for quantitative prediction of the full 3d flow field including
aerodynamic forces, also for separated flow beyond stall. Our evidence
consists of accurate solutions of the 3d Navier-Stokes equations in close
correspondence with observation, and an analysis of these solutions.

We therefore request a new review process by AIAA of our article, without
being simply discarding in a defense of the classical theory.

Sincerely, JH, JJ and CJ

Resurrected Boosted Scientific Method

Feyerabend describes in Against Method a collapse of 19th century science based on the idea that there is a "scientific method" capable of leading scientists to discover "truths" about the World. Feyerabend describes 20th century science as a science without "method" where "Anything Goes",  connecting to Kuhn's analysis with "method" replaced by "fashion".

Feyerabend thus describes a change at the turn to the 20th century from rational positivism of enlightenment and modernity into postmodern pessimism, which is essentially the change from classical physics into modern physics.

But to give up rationality and "method" if it is not really necessary, may be stupid and so it is important to understand (i) the limits of the "method" of classical physics and (ii) what caused the collapse into modern physics.

Classical physics can be described by combinations of
  • Lagrange equations of rigid body mechanics (Newton's equation of motion)
  • Navier's equations of solid mechanics
  • Navier-Stokes equations of fluid/gas mechanics
  • Maxwell's equations of electro-magnetics.
The equations express balance of forces and constitutive relations describing material properties as sets of partial differential equations and the "method" consist of finding the constitutive relations by theory or experiment and then solving the equations.

Combined with the computer this "method" is today used on a large scale in science and engineering as a rational approach to simulating, controling and understanding the world. Combined with the computer classical physics does not seem to have any real limits. Nothing of this can be described as "Anything Goes".

The collapse of classical physics around 1900 was caused by two perceived paradoxes:
  • The ultraviolet catastrophe of blackbody radiation.
  • The Michelson-Morley paradox of perceived non-existence of an ether medium for propagation of electromagnetic waves.
The ultraviolet catastrophe led to quantum mechanics and the ether paradox to relativity theory, the two pillars of modern physics, both representing the "Anything Goes" of Feyerabend as physical theories beyond rationality and human comprehension.

But both paradoxes may be solved essentially within the "method" of classical physics as I seek to show in Mathematical Physics of Blackbody Radiation and Many-Minds Relativity

If I am right, then maybe scientific method can be resurrected, not as limitation but as an effective tool of both rationalization and discovery combined with an open mind of "Anything Goes" as a door to both invention and understanding.

The computer thus boosts the scientific method of classical physics into a formidable tool and opens to a new modern positivism following postmodern pessimism. The introduction of the iPad 100 years after the collapse of classical physics, may well come to signify the new modernity of resurrected boosted scientific method. After all, an iPad app is nothing but computational mathematical physics created by an inventive mind using the "method".

As an example of resurrected boosted classical fluid mechanics, discover The Secret of Flight.

Lift (Not) Explained at National Air and Space Museum

A museum full of objects but empty of understanding.

Here is the response from John D. Anderson, Curator of Aerodynamics, Smithsonian National Air and Space Musuem, to my question how lift of a wing is explained by state-of-the-art expertise of today:
  • There are several explanations that have been offered for how aerodynamic lift is produced on an airfoil.
  • Some of these explanations are given with almost religious fervor, which sometimes generates heated intellectual debate over which is correct.
  • Such discussions are a matter of philosophy as to which explanation is the most fundamental.
  • The following is my philosophical conviction as to the most fundamental mechanisms used by nature to generate lift:
  • The lift is mainly due to the pressure distribution on the surface; shear stress has only a small effect on lift. In general, for an airfoil that is generating lift, the average pressure exerted on the top surface (pressing down on the airfoil) is smaller than the average pressure exerted on the bottom surface (pressing up on the airfoil). With lower pressure on the top and higher pressure on the bottom, presto -- lift on the airfoil.
  • Therefore, let us concentrate on how nature creates this situation, i.e., how nature produces the pressure distribution over the surface of the airfoil.
  • First, the flow velocity is faster over the top surface and slower over the bottom surface. Why? Because mass must be conserved.
  • Now let us invoke the famous “Bernoulli principle”:
  • Because the flow speeds up as it flows over the top surface of an airfoil, as explained above, then the pressure over the top surface must go down.
  • The flow velocity over the bottom surface is lower than over the top, hence the pressure over the bottom surface is higher than on the top. This imbalance of pressure (higher on the bottom and lower on the top) creates an upward force on the airfoil – the lift.
  • Please note: In nature, the velocity increase does not come first, and the pressure decrease does not come second, or vice versa.
  • Nature does all this simultaneously, applying the fundamental laws all at the same time. Nature sets up a velocity field and a pressure field simultaneously, fields that obey the fundamental principles.
  • So there you have it. The absolute fundamental principles of mass conservation and Newton’s 2nd law are the reasons why lift is produced, and we have just explained how nature invokes these two principles to create lift on an airfoil.
  • This is what nature does.
  • I can not advance a philosophy on the generation of lift more fundamental than this, although it takes a full page to explain it.
To sum up, lift results from Newton's 2nd law and mass conservation, according to the highest authority of state-of-the-art science represented by John D. Anderson, author of the book Fundamentals of Aerodynamics, professor em of aerodynamics at Univ. of Maryland and Curator of the National Air and Space Museum.

But this is science reduced to empty triviality. Anderson sends me the following excuse:
  • My explanation is based on the fundamentals of physics that apply to any flow, incompressible to hypersonic. This explanation is different from yours, but neither is necessarily “wrong.”
No, it is not "wrong" because it is completely empty, and an empty statement cannot be judged as "wrong", only void of any meaningful content.

But a Museum of Science which is empty has no role to play, nor does a scientific theory which is a triviality.

PS1 Note that Anderson does not mention circulation theory, the only non-trivial theory of lift presented in text books,  presumably because Anderson share our insight that it is an unphysical and thus incorrect theory.

PS2 The aerodynamics experts at KTH (Art Rizzi and Ulf Ringertz) are smarter than Anderson; they simply refuse to answer any question posed by me about state-of-the-art. But to say nothing is less than repeating a triviality.

PS3 Anderson does not say that our New Theory of Flight is "necessarily "wrong"", which could mean that Anderson believes that it could well be correct. But Anderson does not say that he has studied the New Theory to find out if is correct or not. It may be that Anderson would rather see our theory published by AIAA as new input to a discussion without conclusion since 100 years, than a rejection aimed at stifling discussion. I have asked him about his opinion of the New Theory and will report the answer.

PS4 The generation of lift of a wing is described by Anderson as follows on the museum's web site How Things Fly educating the next generation of US scientists:
  • A wing is shaped and tilted so the air moving over it moves faster than the air moving under it. As air speeds up, its pressure goes down. So the faster-moving air above exerts less pressure on the wing than the slower-moving air below. The result is an upward push on the wing—lift!

One Paradox Enough to Kill a Theory

A scientific paradox is a contradiction between the prediction of a scientific theory and observation.

The detection of a paradox of a scientific theory means the end of the theory, unless the contradiction between theory and observation can somehow be resolved, either by changing the theory or the observation.

As an illuminating illustration let us consider D'Alembert's paradox in fluid mechanics, which compares the zero drag of potential flow as stationary incompressible inviscid flow around a body of any shape, with the observation of substantial drag in slightly viscous flow of aero/hydro-mechanics. Theory says drag = 0, while observation shows drag = 1, a glaring contradiction.

D'Alembert's paradox was formulated in 1752 but was not solved until 2008 after 256 years of brooding by the most able minds of mathematics and mechanics.

How was the paradox then handled during its 256 years of existence as a potentially lethal poison to the science of fluid mechanics? Since observation of drag =1 could not be argued away, it was necessary to blame one of the assumptions of potential flow for the unrealistic prediction of zero drag, and then the assumption of zero viscosity of inviscid flow was the first choice:

It was argued that even if the viscosity of air or water is very small, it is not zero and drag = 1 thus results from an arbitrarily small positive viscosity. This led from the zero viscosity Euler equations, allowing unphysical potential solutions which could be computed analytically, to the positive viscosity Navier-Stokes equations with solutions which could not be computed at all.

The paradox was thus wiped away by a gesture without any real scientific substance. If solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations could not be computed then no predictions could be made assuming positive viscosity, which thus was a useless theory. Practical engineering was thus thrown back into d'Alembert's paradox of zero drag of inviscid flow incompatible with the observed lift of a wing in many experiments in the late 19th century preparing for the powered sustained flight demonstrated by the Wright brothers in 1903.

The observations required a change of theory and since positive viscosity had led to a dead end,  a new card had to be pulled and this was the circulation theory of Kutta and Zhukovsky changing potential flow by large scale circulation around the wing section. From circulation followed lift (but still no drag) and the problem now was to explain the generation of circulation by a wing.

To this end, viscosity was again brought in, which of course led to the same dead end as before, but with a bit of mathematics of analytical functions, this was covered up and kept the paradox under control for over 100 years, although many scientists had their doubts.

A non-correct resolution of a paradox thus showed to be better than no resolution at all (which as indicated was unacceptable). One way of maintaining an incorrect theory involving a paradox, thus amounts to presenting one incorrect resolution after the other of the paradox as a way to delay the final verdict that the theory is incorrect.

If you follow this blog, you know about the correct resolution of d'Alembert's paradox presented in 2008 and you may well understand the far-reaching consequences of the the resolution.

Feyerabend on the New Theory of Flight

Paul Feyerabend expresses the central message of Against Method as follows:
  • My intention is not to replace one set of general rules by another such set: my intention is, rather, to convince the reader that all methodologies, even the most obvious ones, have their limits. The best way to show this is to demonstrate the limits and even the irrationality of some rules which she, or he, is likely to regard as basic.
Let us speculate about what Feyerabend might have said about the New Theory of Flight explaining the generation of large lift at the price of small drag of the wing of an airplane or bird, that is the secret of flight. Feyerabend could have posed the following questions:
  1. When and how was the secret of flight revealed in the form of the New Theory of Flight?
  2. Why did it take so long time (100 years after the first sustained powered flight)?
We could have answered Feyerabend as follows:

The New Theory of Flight came out as a natural consequence of the resolution of D'Alembert's paradox by Hoffman and Johnson in 2008 describing slightly viscous bluff body flow as potential flow modified by 3d rotational separation. This description was rationalized from a stability analysis of potential flow after inspection of computed turbulent solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

The "method" used was to solve the Navier-Stokes equations computationally, understanding that slightly viscous flow should be well described by the Navier-Stokes with a slip boundary condition, and then look for features of the turbulent solutions which could be grasped by analytical mathematics. This "method" worked in this case because the main feature of 3d rotational separation could be connected to the basic instability mechanism of potential flow at separation.

We could thus "understand" slightly viscous bluff body flow, such as the flow around a wing, in analytical mathematical terms as potential flow modified by 3d rotational separation resulting from instability of potential flow separation.

We then used the general principle of science that "understanding" of a physical phenomenon means capturing the main features of a mathematical model of the phenomenon in "understandable" analytical terms.

We thus used a "method"consisting of
  • solving the Navier-Stokes equations computationally,
  • comparing the solution with the potential solution,
  • analyzing the stability of the potential solution.
We could have asked Feyerabend if this can be described as "anything goes" in the spirit of Against Method, or if it represents an approach which is less ad hoc.

Why did it take so long time to reach this relatively simple insight? Because computational solution of turbulent solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations became possible only 100 years after the first powered sustained flight.

From Pessimism to Positivism in Aerodynamics/Science

The Enigma of the Aerofoil: Rival Theories in Aerodynamics 1909-1930, by David Bloor, 2011, describes the initial British criticism of the German circulation theory of lift developed by Kutta and Prandtl in the beginning of the 20th century, which resisted the attack in the absence of something better and became the leading theory propagated in text books still today (see previous post).

The book can be read as an expression of the pessimism of science resulting from the collapse of classical rational science caused by certain apparent contradictions or paradoxes at the turn to the 20th century, which forced physicists to abandon causality/determinism and fundamental concepts of space and time in the formation of the modern physics of quantum mechanics and relativity theory. For perspectives on this astounding story check out Dr Faustus of Modern Physics.

Bloor describes a similar collapse in aerodynamics away from the British rationality of the (Navier)-Stokes equations, because the equations could not be solved analytically and not computationally 100 years ago,  into a German "practical engineering solution" with lift trivially generated by circulation without description of the generation of circulation.

In the last chapter Pessimism, Positivism and Relativism: Aerodynamic Knowledge in Context, Bloor seeks to rationalize the drift away from positivism or "truth" into relativism with many truths or pessimism with no truth at all, as an inevitable process characterizing modernity:
  • Those who point to the airplane as a symbol of the truth of science, the power of technology, and the reality of knowledge are therefore right—but do they know what they are saying?
  • The successful strategy involved the deliberate use of known falsehoods in artful balance with accepted truths. The supporters of circulation theory showed how simple falsehoods could yield dependable conclusions when dealing with a complex and otherwise intractable reality. This is the real enigma of the aerofoil.
  • The enigma of the aerofoil is the enigma of all knowledge.
This expresses a breakdown of rational science into black magic, where simple falsehoods could yield dependable conclusions.

But today it is possible to solve the Navier-Stokes equations computationally, and this changes the science of aerodynamics from pessimism back into positivism and "truth", based on the original seemingly correct fundamental idea that all of fluid dynamics emerges as solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. This brings a major change into aerodynamics as evidenced on The Secret of Flight, which may be representative for other areas of physics, as further elaborated on The World as Computation.

PS The philosophy of science reacts to the development of science with a certain delay. The logical positivism of the 1920s may be seen as an expression of classical rational science at its peak in the late 19th century, while the postmodern relativism and pessimism of e.g. Feyerabend in Against Method, expresses the collapse of rationality in modern physics.

An attempt to combine relativism with rational positivism is made in Many-Minds Relativity and Many-Minds Quantum Mechanics. I argue that relativism with different views of different observers who do not share a common "objective" view, is compatible with rational logical positivism.

The Enigma of the Airfoil 2

This is a continuation of an earlier post on The World as Computation starting out as follows:

The Enigma of the Aerofoil: Rival Theories in Aerodynamics 1909-1930, by David Bloor, 2011, describes the initial British criticism of the German circulation theory of lift developed by Kutta and Prandtl in the beginning of the 20th century, which resisted the attack in the absence of something better and became the leading theory propagated in text books still today. From the description of the book:
  • Why do aircraft fly? How do their wings support them? In the early years of aviation, there was an intense dispute between British and German experts over the question of why and how an aircraft wing provides lift. David Bloor ... reveals the impact that the divergent mathematical traditions of Cambridge and Göttingen had on this great debate.
It is illuminating to read the book from the perspective of the New Theory of Flight, which explains the real physics of generation of lift and drag of a wing resulting from a specific instability mechanism of potential flow, and in particular shows that the circulation theory is unphysical and thus incorrect.

Bloor says about English skepticism to German circulation theory:
  • Horace Lamb had also made gentle fun of the theory of circulation by exploiting the theological overtones of Kelvin's theorem. In his Rouse Ball Lecture of 1924, titled "The Evolution of Mathematical Physics", Lamb had said of perfect fluid theory that "this theory cannot tell us why an aeeroplane needs power for its propulsion; nor, indeed, can it tell us how the aeroplane obtains its sustenation, unless by assuming certain circumstances to have been established at the Creation which, in all reverence, we find it hard to believe" (circulation).
  • Every takeoff and landing, Lamb hinted, would require divine anticipation and intervention (circulation).
  • In the last edition of his Hydrodynamics, in 1932, Lamb returned to the problem of the origin of circulation and of understanding how it resulted from a smooth flow being established at the trailing edge of a wing. He clearly felt that no satisfactory account had been given of this (circulation).
Bloor describes how English wit outmaneuvers German technocracy, in what can be seen as an anticipation of the upcoming war. Germany lost the war but German circulation theory survived in the absence of anything better.

The book is recommended to anyone supporting state-of-the-art represented by AIAA and thereby  suppressing the New Theory of Flight which finally resolves the Enigma and delivers what Lamb was asking for.http://claesjohnsonmathscience.wordpress.com/2012/07/23/the-enigma-of-the-aerofoil/
